Desktops use full-length DIMM sticks and laptops use shorter SODIMM sticks. Some thin laptops have memory soldered in place and cannot be upgraded.
Two matching sticks run in dual channel, which is faster than a single stick of the same total size. Mixed sticks often work, but at the speed of the slower one.
