Why Wi-Fi Extenders Fail in Bigger Cramond Houses

Almost every Wi-Fi callout we take on in Cramond looks the same before we walk through the door — a bigger detached house, a router in the study at one end, and two or three plug-in extenders bought a few months apart to try to reach the far bedroom, the summer room, or the garden studio. The customer is convinced the broadband is broken. In our experience it almost never is. The problem is that a stacked chain of plug-in extenders is genuinely the wrong tool for a house of this shape, and it gets worse the more of them you add.

Why Cramond Houses Are Harder Than People Expect

Cramond is dominated by detached and semi-detached family houses with a bigger footprint than a typical Edinburgh flat, and the layouts are the problem. The router usually goes in at the master socket — often a study, a hallway, or the kitchen at one end — and the far bedroom, garage conversion or garden room can be anywhere from twenty to thirty-five metres away through two or three internal walls and, sometimes, a floor. Add a foil-backed plasterboard partition from a 90s extension and you have a real signal wall inside your own house.

On the bench we consistently measure a 40–55 decibel drop from the router room to the far side of a two-storey detached Cramond house. That is the same territory as a Stockbridge stone tenement, but for a completely different reason — it is the distance and the number of internal barriers, not one single thick wall. Any fix that ignores that geometry will disappoint you.

Why Plug-In Extenders Fail Here

A plug-in extender is a repeater. It listens to your router, then re-broadcasts what it hears. That comes with two hard limits nobody prints on the box. First, the extender can only re-transmit what it can actually receive — plug it into a socket where the signal is already weak and you are just amplifying a poor signal. Second, a single-radio repeater uses the same channel to talk to the router and to your phone, so it roughly halves the throughput before you even open a browser tab.

Now chain a second extender off the first. Throughput halves again. Chain a third — as we regularly see in Cramond — and the last device is running at somewhere between one-eighth and one-sixteenth of the router's real speed, over an already noisy link. That is why customers ring us saying "I've spent hours adding extenders and the Wi-Fi has got worse." That is not superstition. That is exactly how a daisy-chained repeater setup behaves.

A recent callout in Cramond had exactly this pattern — three plug-in extenders scattered between the kitchen, the upstairs landing and the garage conversion, each set up on a different weekend by a different member of the family. The house's own devices were roaming between them at random, sometimes latching onto the weakest of the three. A video call in the garage conversion held for about ninety seconds and then dropped every time. The broadband was fine.

Test the House Properly Before You Buy Anything

Before you order more kit, spend twenty minutes measuring what you actually have. Install a scanning app like Wi-Fi Analyzer (Windows or Android) or use AirPort Utility with Wi-Fi Scan enabled (iPhone). Walk to every room you care about, wait five seconds, and write down the signal strength (RSSI) and the channel. Do it twice — once with all the extenders turned on, and once with every extender unplugged and only the main router live.

Anything above -60 dBm is fine. -60 to -70 dBm is workable but streams will stutter. -70 to -80 dBm is where video calls fall apart. Below -80 dBm is a dead spot. In most Cramond houses I visit, the extender-off reading in the far bedroom is only 5–10 dBm worse than the extender-on reading — which is your proof that the extenders are contributing very little and creating a lot of confusion for the roaming logic on your phone. What Actually Works: Wired Backhaul, Then Mesh

The single most reliable fix for a bigger Cramond detached is one that most articles skip past because it sounds harder than it is — run a length of Ethernet from the router to the far end of the house and put an access point (or a mesh node in wired-backhaul mode) at the other end. The reason it works is boring and physical. Ethernet does not care about stone, plasterboard or distance. A ten-metre Cat6 run down a skirting board or through the loft turns the far bedroom from a dead spot into a room with genuine, full-strength Wi-Fi.

Where a wired run really is impossible — a listed extension, a rendered outer wall, an awkward staircase — a proper dual-band or tri-band mesh kit is the next best answer. Place the second node roughly halfway between the router and the dead spot, not in the dead spot. Two nodes are enough for most Cramond houses; three only pays off in a long L-shape or where a detached garden room is in play. What to Do With the Existing Extenders

Unplug them. All of them. Not "just the one in the hallway" — every extender in the house. Reboot the router, wait two minutes, and re-test on the phone. Nine times out of ten the phone's signal in the far room is now the same or better than it was with the extenders running, because the phone can finally hold a stable connection to the main router instead of hopping between three noisy repeaters. Only once you have that clean baseline should you add a single, well-placed new device — a mesh node or a wired access point — and see whether that fixes the last dead spot.

If you keep the extenders anyway, at least give each one a distinct network name so you can see which device your phone has connected to. Merging them into one "smart" network almost always makes the roaming behaviour worse in a house this size.

When to Call in a Survey

If you have unplugged the extenders, moved the router off the floor and out of a cabinet, and the far bedroom is still hopeless, an in-person survey is worth doing before you spend on hardware. We bring a proper signal meter, measure every room on both bands, check for channel clashes with the neighbours, and tell you exactly where a wired backhaul is realistic — including the ones where the honest answer is a single ten-metre Ethernet run rather than any new Wi-Fi kit at all.
