Of all the Wi-Fi complaints we hear from Tollcross, this is the one that quietly drives people mad: the connection isn't slow, and speed tests come back fine when they run — but every ten or twenty minutes the signal blinks out for a handful of seconds, drops the Zoom call, kicks the Xbox controller offline, and comes right back. It's not a broken router, and it's usually not the ISP either. In tenement flats packed shoulder-to-shoulder with other households, this is almost always a Wi-Fi airwave problem: too many routers within earshot of yours, all shouting on the same handful of channels.

The pattern is different from an evening-only slowdown — that's usually contention on the ISP side, and we've covered it separately in our post on why Marchmont Wi-Fi slows down every evening. Channel interference, by contrast, produces short, sharp drop-outs at any time of day. Fixing it doesn't need new hardware, and in most Tollcross flats we can sort it in a single visit through our networking and Wi-Fi service.

What This Fault Actually Looks Like

Speed tests are a poor way to catch it, because the drop only lasts a few seconds and the test either completes fine between drops or fails outright and you re-run it. The signs we actually look for on the bench are:

  • Video calls that briefly freeze then unfreeze — Zoom, Teams and Meet all show a small "reconnecting" flash and carry on.
  • Smart plugs, doorbells or cameras that go "offline" in the app for a moment and come back on their own.
  • Phones showing the little "no internet" warning next to the Wi-Fi icon that then clears itself.
  • Downloads that stall for a few seconds and resume, rather than dying completely.
  • Devices closer to the router recovering faster than the ones two rooms away.

If that pattern sounds familiar, and the drops happen at all hours rather than only in the evening, keep reading. This is very rarely a router fault and almost never a line fault — it's the 2.4 GHz band being too crowded.

Why Tollcross Tenement Flats Get Hit Hardest

Around Home Street, Lauriston Place, Bruntsfield Place and the tenements running down to Fountainbridge, an average flat has a router within about six metres of it in every direction — the flat above, the flat below, and the two on either side. Add the offices along Lothian Road and the flats opposite, and it's normal to see twenty to thirty other Wi-Fi networks visible from a single top-floor front room.

That would be manageable if they were spread out, but the 2.4 GHz band that older devices default to only has three genuinely non-overlapping channels — 1, 6 and 11. Every router in the block is being forced onto one of those three lanes, and none of them can hear each other's traffic properly, so they keep talking over each other. Your router doesn't fail; it just has to keep pausing and retrying, and every so often that pause is long enough that your device gives up and re-associates. That's the "drop".

A Real Bench Example from a Home Street Flat

A customer on Home Street called us last month because two people working from home were losing video calls three or four times an hour. The router (a fairly recent ISP hub) looked fine, speed tests were healthy, and the ISP had already sent a replacement unit that made no difference. On site with a Wi-Fi analyser we counted twenty-seven other 2.4 GHz networks visible from the living room — eleven of them stacked on channel 6, seven on channel 11, and the rest smeared across the overlapping intermediate channels that should be empty. The customer's router had auto-selected channel 6, right in the busiest part of the band.

Moving the two work laptops to the 5 GHz band, splitting the SSIDs so devices could choose, and manually pinning the 2.4 GHz radio to channel 1 (the least-crowded lane visible from that flat) ended the drops that afternoon. No new hardware bought, no ISP change, no complicated mesh install. Just airwaves.

Move to 5 GHz Where You Can

The 5 GHz band has far more channels, doesn't travel through walls as easily — which sounds bad, but is actually a gift in a tenement, because it means the neighbours' 5 GHz traffic doesn't reach you either. Any laptop, phone or console made in the last five or six years will support it. The catch is that many ISP routers ship with a single combined SSID that hides which band a device ends up on, and the router's own logic often parks devices on 2.4 GHz to preserve range.

In the router's app or admin page, look for an option called something like "split bands", "separate SSIDs" or "smart connect — off". Give the 2.4 and 5 GHz networks slightly different names (for example YourWiFi and YourWiFi-5). Connect the important work and video-call devices to the 5 GHz network by name and leave the smart-home gear, older printers and legacy IoT bits on 2.4. It's the single biggest change most Tollcross flats need.

Then Manually Pick a Less Crowded 2.4 GHz Channel

For the devices still on 2.4 GHz, the "auto" channel setting on most home routers is surprisingly bad in a dense tenement — it picks the channel with the loudest signal once at boot, and never re-checks. Install a Wi-Fi analyser app on an Android phone (iOS restricts the API, so an Android is genuinely more useful here) and take a walk around the flat looking at the 2.4 GHz view. Pick whichever of channels 1, 6 or 11 has the fewest neighbouring networks on it and the lowest peak signal, then pin the router to that channel manually.

Two Smaller Router Tweaks We Almost Always Do

Once the bands are split and the 2.4 channel is pinned, we normally make two more changes on the router that quietly help. First, turn off the router's own scheduled reboot if it has one — most ISP hubs run a nightly restart, which is fine on paper but resets the manually-picked 2.4 GHz channel back to auto every morning. Second, disable "band steering" if it's separate from the split-SSID setting, because on some models it keeps trying to shove devices back onto 2.4 GHz "for compatibility" even after you've split the networks.

When It's Not Channel Interference After All

Two other faults produce broadly similar symptoms and are worth ruling out before you spend an afternoon on this. A router that reboots itself every hour or so — power lights briefly going out — is a different problem entirely; we've covered it in why your router keeps restarting itself. And drops that only ever affect one specific device (usually an older laptop) are more likely a driver or Wi-Fi card issue on that machine than an airwave problem. If in doubt, watch the router's lights during a drop: if the Wi-Fi light stays on and only clients disconnect, it's interference; if the power light itself flickers, it's the router.

Only mildly, and only during setup. Smart plugs, older doorbells and most basic IoT gear only support 2.4 GHz — splitting the SSIDs makes that explicit, so you know to add them to the 2.4 GHz network specifically. Some brands (older Ring, TP-Link Kasa, generic smart bulbs) refuse to pair if they can see a 5 GHz network with the same name, so splitting the names is usually a help rather than a hindrance.

Rarely, and not for this fault. Mesh systems solve coverage problems in bigger houses — garden offices, converted lofts, long hallways. In a two- or three-bed tenement flat the room-to-room coverage is usually fine and adding another radio just adds another voice on the same crowded 2.4 GHz band. Fix the channel and band-split first; only consider mesh if there's a genuine dead-spot after that.
