The way it usually starts is this. A customer walks in from Morningside Road or Comiston, sits the laptop down on the workshop bench and opens the lid to show us the exact thing they saw at home. A single line runs top to bottom down the screen — sometimes pink, sometimes bright blue or green, sometimes an inch-wide stripe of jumbled colour that flickers when the lid moves. Everything else on the display works. Windows loads. Sound plays. The mouse moves. It is just this one line, and it will not go. If that is what you are looking at right now, this is the pattern we work through when a Morningside screen replacement booking comes in for it.
The reason it deserves its own walk-through is that the answer changes the job completely. If the line is a dead column of pixels on the panel itself, the fix is a new screen. If it is a signal problem along the ribbon behind the lid, no new panel is needed at all and the same screen goes back into service with a properly seated cable. The two look identical from the sofa. On the bench they are separable inside about twenty minutes, and we save an awful lot of laptops from needless panel swaps by running that diagnostic first.
What a “Line on the Screen” Actually Is
An LCD panel is not one thing either. It is a grid of tiny liquid-crystal cells, a backlight sitting behind them, and a small chip along the top or side edge that tells each column and row of cells what colour to be. The signal to that chip arrives from the graphics card through a thin ribbon — almost all modern laptops use an eDP (embedded DisplayPort) cable; older machines used LVDS. That cable is routed up through one of the hinges, up the inside of the lid, and clipped into a small connector on the back of the panel.
A line down the display is always a failure of one of those pieces. The column driver on the panel is dead, so a whole column of pixels has stopped changing colour. Or the signal reaching the column driver is corrupted or interrupted, so the panel receives nonsense for that column. Or a small area of pixels has been physically damaged, and looks like a line without actually being one. Everything that follows is us telling which of those three we are looking at, in order of how expensive they are to fix.
The Three Things It Usually Turns Out to Be
A dead column on the panel itself. A single, perfectly straight line, one pixel wide, holding one colour that never changes when the desktop changes. Often a solid bright red, green, blue or white. The line is completely static. This is a failed column driver on the panel and cannot be repaired — the fault is inside the panel assembly. The screen has to be swapped.
A signal fault on the ribbon. A wider line or band, often multicoloured, sometimes flickering, sometimes only appearing when the lid is at a particular angle. Rebooting or moving the lid changes it. This is not the panel; it is the eDP ribbon or its connector, and on many machines it is a reseat rather than a replacement. This is the case worth catching.
Pressure damage that looks like a line. A dark, blurry vertical stripe with soft edges rather than sharp ones. Common on laptops that have been sat on, closed with a pen or a set of headphones inside, or dropped in a rucksack. Damage to the polariser layer or the liquid crystal itself. Same fix as a dead column — the panel is not recoverable — but at least the diagnosis is clear.
Those three are, in our workshop experience, virtually every case. Everything else is a rounding error.
Step 1 — Rule Out Windows With a BIOS Boot
Before we touch a screwdriver, we take Windows out of the picture. Power the laptop off completely, then power it on and immediately tap F2, F10, F12 or Delete depending on the make until the BIOS or UEFI setup screen appears — a blue or grey menu with tabs across the top, no Windows involved. If the line is still there in BIOS, the fault is hardware. If it disappears in BIOS and only comes back in Windows, the fault is a graphics driver, a corrupted display profile or a stuck screen recording overlay, and the fix is entirely on the software side.
Nine times out of ten the line is there in BIOS. That is important because it settles the question before we spend an hour reinstalling drivers on a laptop whose panel is actually the problem. On the rare occasions it is only present in Windows, a clean graphics driver reinstall with DDU in safe mode — which we cover in more detail in the external monitor divide-and-conquer guide — usually clears it.
Step 2 — The External Monitor Test
The next step separates the display side of the laptop from the graphics side. Plug an external monitor into the HDMI, USB-C or DisplayPort output. If the external screen is clean, the graphics card and everything behind it is fine, and the fault is definitely between the graphics output and the panel. That narrows the job to two possibilities: the panel itself, or the ribbon cable between the graphics card and the panel. If the external screen shows the same line, the fault is further back, either on the GPU side or somewhere in the video signal path before it splits, and it is a very different job. Step 3 — The Lid-Angle Test
Once we know the fault is between the graphics output and the panel, we do something almost no one thinks to try at home. We slowly open and close the lid, watching the line, in ten-degree increments from fully closed to fully open. If the line stays exactly the same shape and colour at every angle, the panel is doing it and the ribbon is fine — that is a panel swap. If the line changes at all when the lid moves — disappears at 130°, doubles at 90°, flickers when the lid is nudged with a finger — the ribbon is being flexed and it is a cable fault, not a panel one.
This is where a lot of laptops get needlessly written off. A well-meaning generic web article says “line on your screen means new panel” and the owner accepts a replacement quote when a twenty-minute reseat of the eDP connector on the back of the existing panel would have brought the screen back to perfect. We see it every month, and it is why the lid-angle test lives near the top of the sheet on the workshop wall.
Step 4 — Gentle Pressure on the Bezel
The last non-invasive test is pressing very gently on the plastic bezel that surrounds the screen — particularly along the top edge, and around each hinge. Never on the screen glass itself. If the line changes, appears, disappears or shifts across a few pixels when the top bezel is pressed, the ribbon is loose at the connector on the back of the panel. If it changes when the bezel is pressed near the hinges, the cable is likely damaged inside or near the hinge routing. Both are cable jobs, not panel jobs, but the second one is more work because the cable itself has to be replaced rather than reseated.
Reseating an eDP connector is workshop territory. It means removing the front bezel, freeing the panel from the lid frame, sliding out the LCD-side connector, checking for oxide on the contacts, cleaning it if needed and clicking it back home. It sounds simple — it usually is — but the bezels on modern ultrabooks are thin plastic held on with double-sided tape, and one clumsy prying-tool angle turns an easy fix into a replacement lid assembly. That is why we do it on a mat with the right spudgers rather than a butter knife, and why laptop repairs and screen work are jobs we quote as a set on many models.
When It Is Definitely the Panel
If the line is one pixel wide, one solid colour, present in BIOS, present on an external monitor test, unchanged at every lid angle, and unchanged when the bezel is pressed, the answer is a panel replacement. There is no fix short of that. The good news is that panels for the most common Morningside customer laptops — Dell XPS, HP EliteBook, Lenovo ThinkPad, various MacBook Air and Pro models, and a long tail of student HP and Acer machines — are all available in original-equipment grade from the same panel makers Dell and HP use themselves. We fit the same grade of panel we would have specced for the original build; there is no need to accept an aftermarket downgrade because the original supply is still there.
If the panel is one of the fused glass-and-LCD assemblies common on 2020-and-later ultrabooks — where the front glass and the LCD are bonded together as a single unit — the whole assembly is replaced together and the finish looks as it did on day one. On older business laptops the LCD alone comes out and the existing bezel and glass go back on. Both are workshop jobs but the finished result is the same.
When It Is the eDP Ribbon — and Why Hinges Kill It
The cable case is the one worth understanding because it is the one that catches so many people out. The ribbon is a flexible flat cable, usually running through one of the lid hinges. Every time the lid opens and closes, that cable flexes. On a laptop that has been opened five times a day for four or five years, it has flexed something like eight thousand times, and the copper traces inside it eventually work-harden and crack. That is not a manufacturing defect; it is metallurgy meeting time.
When one of those internal traces cracks, the signal to the column it drives becomes intermittent. A line appears when the lid is at the exact angle that pulls the crack open. At a different angle the cable closes back on itself and the signal returns; the line vanishes. That is the classic hinge-cable failure, and it is one of the more satisfying jobs on the bench because a small replacement ribbon turns a laptop the owner had already written off into a fully working machine again. The Morningside Pattern We See
The mix that comes into the workshop from Morningside — the streets round Morningside Road, up through Bruntsfield, over towards Marchmont and Merchiston, and down the slope to Tollcross — is dominated by two archetypes. Older Dell XPS 13 and HP EliteBook machines belonging to remote workers and consultants, opened and closed all day for years, are the classic hinge-cable candidates. The second archetype is the university-student HP or Acer laptop that has spent two academic years in a rucksack and got sat on once during a bus into town. Those tend to be the pressure-damage cases where a soft vertical stripe appears and never quite comes out.
What both share is that a “you need a new laptop” verdict from a first-glance shop is nearly always wrong. Roughly two thirds of the “line on the screen” jobs we see are ribbon fixes or single-panel replacements that keep the rest of the machine in service for another two or three years. Only the drop-and-crack cases and the very oldest units are genuinely uneconomical to fix. The path in the middle almost always exists, and it is worth ten minutes on the bench to find it.
What To Do Right Now
- Take a phone photo of the line at three lid angles — almost closed, ninety degrees and fully open. That single message tells us before you leave the house whether we are almost certainly looking at a cable or a panel.
- Reboot into BIOS (F2/F10/F12/Delete on power-up) and see if the line is present there. Line in BIOS = hardware; line only in Windows = software.
- Plug in any external monitor. If the external is clean, the fault is on the display side of the laptop and the answer is either the panel or the ribbon — not the GPU.
- Do not press on the screen. Pressing anywhere on the LCD surface itself risks making pressure damage worse or turning a ribbon fault into a panel fault. Pressing gently on the plastic bezel is fine.
- Stop closing and opening the lid if the line comes and goes with movement. Every extra flex on a cracked ribbon shortens what is left of it.
- Back up anything you can while the screen is still readable. If you cannot see well enough to back up on the laptop itself, use the external monitor from Step 2 — it is one of the easier fixes we do under hardware upgrades to add a working display while the panel is on order.
- Book it in for a proper diagnostic. If the phone photos already point to a cable, we will quote a reseat first; if they point to a panel, we can have the correct part on the bench the same day for the common models. The through-line here is one we come back to on almost every screen job: a symptom is not a diagnosis. “Line on the screen” is a symptom, and it is a symptom of three different problems with three different answers. Ten minutes of proper testing tells us which one is in front of us, and that ten minutes is often the difference between a small cable job and an unnecessary panel swap. It is also, on any laptop worth keeping, the difference between a machine that lives for another two or three years and a machine that ends up on a shelf.
