Your SD card was working yesterday. This morning, back home in South Queensferry after a family walk along the Forth Bridges, you slot it into the laptop and Windows tells you the card needs to be formatted before you can use it. Or worse — nothing at all. No pop-up, no drive letter, just a card the computer refuses to acknowledge. This is one of the most common photo-recovery calls we take from South Queensferry and Dalmeny, and the honest answer is nearly always the same: don't format it, don't reinsert it repeatedly, and stop reading if you can drop it off today.
This is a plain-English guide to what a "not reading" SD card actually means, what to do in the first ten minutes, and what a real data recovery service can and cannot do with a card that Windows has given up on. If you already have the card in your hand and it holds photos you cannot afford to lose, skip to the drop-off section at the end.
What "Not Reading" Actually Means on an SD Card
The two symptoms customers describe are very different problems under the bonnet. If the card appears in File Explorer with a drive letter but Windows prompts "You need to format the disk in drive X: before you can use it", the hardware is talking fine — the file-allocation table has been corrupted. If the card doesn't appear at all, either the card's controller has failed, or the reader has. Those two categories need different tools and, more importantly, different first responses.
On the bench, the very first thing we do with a "dead" card is put it in a fresh, powered USB-C card reader — one we know works. A surprising proportion of "my SD card is broken" jobs turn out to be a failed built-in reader on the laptop, or a knackered no-name adapter from a stationery drawer, with a perfectly healthy card inside. That five-second test saves customers a lot of unnecessary worry.
The First Ten Minutes: What to Do (and Not Do)
Whatever the card is doing, do not click Format when Windows offers it. Formatting rewrites the file-allocation table with a fresh, empty one. On a card whose FAT is merely scrambled, this drops your recovery odds from very high to very low, because the recovery software now has to hunt for photos by their JPEG headers instead of following the tidy index that used to point at them.
Don't keep pulling the card in and out either. Every reinsert on a card with a flaky controller runs the risk of another partial write, and every time Windows sees a "new" removable drive it may attempt filesystem repair on mount — again writing to the very thing you want left alone. Take the card out once, put it on the desk in its case, and don't touch it until you know what you're doing next.
If the failure happened mid-shoot (the camera showed "Card Error" or the phone lost the card halfway through a video), don't power the device back on with the card in it. Cameras and drones are notorious for aggressively "repairing" a card they think is corrupted, which can obliterate whatever was recoverable.
The Real Causes We See on the Bench
The single most common cause of a corrupted SD card we see at the Edinburgh workshop is the hot-unplug — pulling the card out of a running camera or a laptop mid-write, without ejecting. The filesystem was halfway through updating the FAT and got cut off; the next mount finds an inconsistent index and refuses to trust it. This is usually the most recoverable failure mode. The photos are still there on the flash, just no longer easy to find.
Second is physical stress. SD cards are surprisingly delicate — the plastic body flexes, the internal contacts are hair-thin, and a card left in a pocket that then goes through the washing machine will usually still work for a while and then die abruptly. Same with cards left on a car dashboard in July sun. We see a lot of these in July and August around the Forth Bridges circuit.
Third is age. Flash memory has a finite write count per cell. A card that has been in a security camera or a dashcam for three or four years, being overwritten every hour, eventually exhausts spare blocks and the controller flips it to read-only or refuses to mount. If your "dead" card came out of a dashcam, that is almost certainly what has happened, and the news is good — read-only failures usually image cleanly.
The Counterfeit-Card Trap
We keep a small labelled tin on the bench of counterfeit high-capacity cards recovered from customer jobs — cards sold on marketplace sites as 512GB or 1TB that are, under the hood, a genuine 32GB or 64GB card with hacked firmware that lies to the operating system about its size. They work fine until you fill them past their real capacity. At that point the controller wraps back to the beginning and starts overwriting your earliest data with your newest. The classic symptom is: the first few dozen photos from a holiday open normally, and everything from later in the trip is garbled or plays back as green screen.
If a card looked like a bargain for its stated size, came from an unknown brand, and arrived in packaging that seemed slightly off, this is what has happened. Recovery is partial at best. The lesson we pass on is short: buy SanDisk, Samsung, Kingston or Lexar from a shop with a returns policy, not a listing.
When Software Can Recover, and When It Can't
For a card that reads but Windows sees as "RAW" or asks to format, well-chosen recovery software often does the job in-house without any physical intervention. We image the card first with dd or a hardware imager onto a workshop drive — always working on the copy, never the original — and then run PhotoRec, R-Studio or a paid tool like DMDE against the image to carve out the photos by their file signatures.
Success rates on hot-unplug corruption are typically very high. Success rates on a card that has been formatted since the loss are much lower — the fresh FAT can partially overwrite the old file table and mislead the recovery pass. Cards that are physically dead — the ones the reader can't see at all — need controller-level work: reading the raw NAND chips directly with a chip programmer, then reconstructing the flash-translation layer in software. A Recent South Queensferry Job
A customer from just off Hopetoun Road brought in a 128GB SDXC card that had been in a mirrorless camera all summer. Six weddings on it, no downloads yet. On the last shoot the camera had shown "Card Error" and refused to power up with the card inserted. By the time the card reached us it had been reinserted about a dozen times, once briefly in a laptop that had offered to format it (they wisely declined).
The card mounted in a fresh USB-C reader on the bench and read as a partly-corrupted exFAT volume. We imaged the whole card overnight — around eleven hours because the controller was throttling on unstable blocks — and ran PhotoRec against the image the next morning. Roughly 96% of the RAW files came back with full EXIF timestamps and card metadata intact; the missing 4% were files being written when the camera cut out, which are structurally unrecoverable. The customer went home with a fresh SanDisk card for the next shoot and a strong opinion about downloading between weddings.
Preventing the Next Card Failure
Two habits prevent almost every SD-card call we take. First: always eject before physically removing the card. Right-click the drive letter in File Explorer and choose Eject; on a camera, use the menu option or wait until the write-light goes out. Two seconds of patience protects the FAT.
Second: don't treat the card as storage. A card is a transit medium — copy to a laptop, external drive, or cloud within a day or two of the shoot, and only then reformat the card in-camera for the next job. Cards left for months as the only copy fail on their own timetable, not yours.
