A quiet click every second or so, coming from a USB hard drive in Haddington that used to just work — this is one of the most common data-loss calls we take from East Lothian, and it is almost always more urgent than the customer realises. What "Clicking" Actually Means Inside the Drive

Inside a spinning USB hard drive — the WD Elements, Seagate Backup Plus, Toshiba Canvio and My Passport family — glass platters spin at 5,400 or 7,200 revolutions per minute, and read/write heads float above them on a cushion of air about the thickness of a smoke particle. The heads never touch the platters when the drive is healthy; they park on a plastic ramp at the edge when it spins down.

A rhythmic click almost always means the heads are trying to move, hitting an end-stop, and being asked to reset. On the bench we usually find one of three causes: a knock or drop that has bent a head; dust contamination on a platter; or age — the head suspension arms wear out after five to seven years of daily use. Whatever the cause, every retry drags a damaged head across the platter surface where your data lives.

Stop Powering It On — Every Retry Makes It Worse

The single most important thing to do with a clicking drive is unplug it and leave it alone. Not "leave it running while I copy off what I can". Not "try it once more on a different laptop". Off, unplugged, sat on a shelf, until you have decided what to do next.

The reason is physical. A failing head still moving will grind microscopic grooves into the magnetic surface every time it sweeps across. Data that is intact after five minutes of clicking is often unrecoverable after two hours. We have had drives arrive from Haddington where the platter surface under a microscope looks like a record scratched by a nail — nothing any lab in the world can do with those. The same drive, brought in after the first three or four click cycles, would very often have come back with everything on it.

The Freezer Trick and Other Advice to Ignore

There is a persistent internet myth that putting a failing hard drive in the freezer will get it working long enough to copy the data off. In the 1990s, on some drive models, there was a grain of truth to it — cold shrank a swollen bearing enough for the drive to spin. On any modern drive it is bad advice.

When you take a chilled drive out into a room-temperature Haddington kitchen, moisture condenses on the platters. The head, floating micrometres above the surface, then flies straight into a water droplet. That is a mechanical crash guaranteed to destroy the platter under the head, in the first second the drive is powered on.

The other bad-advice classic is running consumer file-recovery software against a physically damaged drive. Recuva and PhotoRec are excellent for a healthy drive whose files were deleted by accident — a very different failure mode. Running them against a clicking drive keeps it powered on for hours while they scan, which is exactly what you must not do.

A shop that promises "clean-room recovery" out of a high-street unit is almost always fibbing — a real ISO Class 5 clean-room takes six figures to build and run. A large minority of "clicking" drives turn out to have a failed USB-to-SATA bridge board rather than a mechanical fault — you hear the same click when the interface starves the motor of power. Those we fix in-house by swapping the drive into a SATA dock, imaging it cleanly, and returning the data on a fresh drive. The genuine head-crash cases go to a partner clean-room lab; we handle diagnosis, the honest go/no-go call, and the logistics.

A Recent Haddington Example

A customer from just off Court Street brought in a two-terabyte Seagate Backup Plus at the start of June. It had been clicking for about a fortnight, and they had kept plugging it in every couple of days to "see if it had fixed itself". Inside were eight years of family photos and the accounts for a small business run from the house.

Under imaging, the outer third of the disk read cleanly in one pass. The middle third came back in a slower second pass with about ten thousand bad sectors flagged. The inner third — where their more recent photos happened to live — was where the head had spent most of its time struggling, and it had scored a shallow ring visible under a scope. About 70% of the recent photos came back; the rest were mixed corruption or gone entirely. Had the drive come in a fortnight earlier, the recovery would almost certainly have been 100%.

Backups That Would Have Saved This

Every data recovery job in Haddington ends with the same conversation. A single external drive is not a backup, because there is only one copy.
