Haymarket has more small professional-services offices per square mile than almost anywhere else in Edinburgh — law firms, accountancy practices, financial advisers, consultancies stacked into the townhouses off Grosvenor Street and the modern blocks around Haymarket Yards. Nearly all of them run the same hardware pattern: a business laptop that slides onto a USB-C dock, driving one or two external monitors, a wired keyboard and mouse, ethernet and often a headset. When that dock stops recognising the monitors on a Monday morning, an entire billable morning can quietly disappear before someone phones us. This is the guide we walk clients through when that call comes in.

1. First: Rule Out the Truly Obvious
Before assuming the dock has failed, do the un-technical checks. Is the monitor actually powered on and set to the correct input (DisplayPort vs HDMI — most business monitors don't auto-switch and default to whichever they last saw a signal on)? Is the video cable seated fully at both ends and not the twenty-year-old VGA lead someone dug out of a drawer? Has the dock's own power brick come loose from the wall, so it's technically running off USB bus power and can't drive external displays? These take a minute and eliminate about a third of the callouts before they start.
Once the physical layer is solid and the dock's own power light is on, the fault genuinely is in the dock-to-laptop handshake — which is where the interesting causes live.
2. USB-C Alt Mode vs Full Thunderbolt — Know Which Your Laptop Has
This trips up more small businesses than any other single thing. Not every USB-C port is created equal. A port marked with a plain USB-C symbol supports "DisplayPort Alt Mode" and can typically drive one external monitor at 4K. A port marked with a lightning bolt (Thunderbolt 3 or 4) can drive two external monitors at 4K without breaking a sweat. If you have a two-monitor dock plugged into a plain USB-C port, one of the monitors will always look dead — because the port simply cannot carry a second video stream.
We've seen this go undiagnosed for weeks in Haymarket offices where a new starter got issued the last laptop off the shelf — an entry-level ultrabook with USB-C but no Thunderbolt — and everyone assumed the dock was faulty because it worked fine on every other desk. Check the port carefully, or the laptop's spec sheet under "video output". If the port genuinely doesn't support two streams, the dock isn't broken; the laptop just can't feed it, and a DisplayLink-based dock (see below) is one of the few ways around it.
3. DisplayLink Drivers — Why the Vendor Update Beats Windows Update
Many popular business docks (a lot of the Dell D3100/D6000, most StarTech multi-monitor units, and many docking hubs sold with ultrabooks) use a chipset called DisplayLink, which pushes video over USB rather than native video pins. DisplayLink needs its own driver, and this is where things repeatedly go wrong: Windows Update sometimes installs an old or generic version that partially works, then a real Windows feature update replaces a related USB driver and the dock loses one or both monitors overnight.
The reliable fix is to ignore Windows Update for this and install the current driver directly from the DisplayLink website. Uninstall the existing DisplayLink software first (Settings → Apps), reboot with the dock unplugged, install the fresh driver, then plug the dock back in. On the bench we've had docks that had been "broken" for a fortnight come straight back on the first reboot after this. If the office has ten machines with the same dock, standardising every one of them on the same DisplayLink build stops the fault re-appearing on individual PCs after updates.
4. The Dock's Own Firmware Might Be Behind
People forget that docks have firmware too. Dell, HP, Lenovo and Kensington all ship firmware updates for their business docks — usually as small Windows utilities — and the changelogs are honest reading: "fixes intermittent loss of DisplayPort output after wake from sleep", "resolves monitor hot-plug not detected on Windows 11 24H2". Skip a couple of years of these and you can end up on firmware that predates the Windows build the laptop is now running, with predictable results.
Before updating dock firmware in a live office, always plug the laptop into mains power and don't run the update over battery — a mid-flash power loss can genuinely brick some docks and turn a monitor problem into a hardware-replacement problem. 5. The Wake-From-Sleep Bug That Loses Handshake
One of the most common patterns we see: the dock works perfectly for a full day, the laptop is closed at 6pm, and the next morning one or both monitors are blank. Docking it out and back in fixes it. This is almost always a handshake bug — the laptop wakes before the dock has finished renegotiating the DisplayPort link, so Windows sees the monitors as "not present" and quietly forgets them.
Two settings usually cure it. In Device Manager, under Universal Serial Bus controllers, open the properties of every "USB Root Hub" and "Generic SuperSpeed USB Hub" entry, go to Power Management, and untick Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Then in the laptop vendor's utility (Dell Power Manager, Lenovo Vantage, HP Support Assistant), disable "Modern Standby / S0" if the option exists and prefer classic S3 sleep. On docks where the fault survives both, adding a five-second delay before the laptop tries to drive external displays — via a manufacturer setting or a simple registry tweak — is what finally holds it.
6. Reseating, Port-Order and Cable Order Tricks That Genuinely Work
When a dock is only detecting one of two monitors and everything else looks fine, the culprit is often the physical port order on the dock itself. On several popular Dell and HP docks, the DisplayPort outputs are electrically prioritised: DP1 must have a live monitor for DP2 to enumerate correctly, and if you're only using the second port, you'll get nothing. Swapping the cable to the "first" video port usually brings both monitors back at once.
Similarly, always plug the USB-C cable from the dock into the laptop's dedicated Thunderbolt port (usually the one closest to the hinge, marked with the bolt), not a spare USB-C port on the other side. Reseating cables sounds trivial, but on daisy-chained DisplayPort setups the connectors have detent springs that weaken over time; a firm click on both ends can fix a "dead" second monitor that no driver reinstall touched. Where a cable itself has finally given up — we see this a lot with braided name-brand cables that have been coiled tightly for a year — our hardware upgrades team stocks the right length and rating so the replacement isn't just any generic lead.
7. When to Stop Troubleshooting and Replace the Dock
Not every dock is worth saving. If a dock is more than four or five years old, has already had one firmware update fail, or now needs to drive a 4K monitor it was never designed for, the honest advice is often to move on. The DisplayLink chipsets in early-generation docks simply cannot keep up with modern refresh rates and colour depths, and no amount of driver rolling will change that. A modern Thunderbolt 4 dock will typically outlive the laptop it was bought for.
